No seriously, I think that Caig's wide spread distribution along with
misinformed salespeople causes a general belief that, like an aspirin
for a headache, one first reaches for DeOxit when their pots are
noisy.
It's only one of many possible treatments, but it's pushed as the
alpha and omega of the pot cleaning world... often with unfortunate
results. Proper application is important, but abuse is common.
They can't make someone require a prescription to get the stuff, so it goes.

I would offer that if most people covered their gear, especially
units with open sliders that face up, they'd avoid problems for a lot
longer than they think. Dusting a unit off that's been sitting for
awhile, like an Odyssey, can actually make them worse. The dust is
forced into the sliders in even greater amounts.
Prevention is the best repair tech. :)
